Research

To understand and get statistics on my subject matter I looked at The Guardian for information and facts. I separated this information into two categories: women at work and women's body image.







Body Image facts:


  • Primark have mannequins with protruding ribs 
  • Debenham's has changed the size of mannequins to the average size 16 British woman.
  • Half of all children in a survey said they wanted there body size thinner
  • 56% of young girls had controlled there weight in the past year.
  • In 1910 models where classed as living mannequins who were named by the dress they wore.
  • Fashion writers by 1920 where advocating slimmer figures
  • Woman appear to adjust there body shape to appeal to men's desires
  • 63% of woman age 18-34 are satisfied with there appearance and 57% between the ages of 35-49.
  • Ideal is young, thin, white, toned, large-breasted, long legged, non-disabled.
  • nearly 10 million women in the UK "feel depressed" because of the way they look.
  • 36% avoid exercise because of insecurities.
  • Barbie gives unrealistic body standards
  • between 1987-2006 44% of women surveyed had mental disorders
  • the number of women who thought of themselves worthless trebled.
  • Materialism is the main cause of this increase in mental health.
  • "I am an important person" increased from 12% to 80% between 1950 ad 1980

Women in work facts:
  • 2.4 children and a husband with a six figure salary is seen to be the american dream
  • women working full time increased by 73,000 to reach 8.08 million.
  •  part time decreased by 53,000 to 5.92 million
  • 1.28 million women started owning there own business.
  • women born in 1983 have 1.02 children by their 30th birthday
  • women born in 1968 have 1.15 children by their 30th birthday
  • A woman aged 47 on average has 1.92 children 
  • The number of cohabiting couples grew by 29.7%
  • between 1987-1999 the amount of mental disorders in women increased from 19% to 32%
  • Women and men are less stressed out at work than they are at home.
  • Women are happier at work than at home
  • Mothers who worked steadily full-time through their 20s and 30s reported better mental and physical health at 45,
  • Lower incomes have more stress reduction at work.
  • High incomes were the only outlier that felt happier at home
  • Women are happier at work because they are only providing one role.
